ISWA Monthly Meeting
April 5, 2009
Call to Order:
Louis Rosbottom called the meeting to order at 12:15 pm.
Roll Call:

Lana Pendoski, John Schattner, Carol Schroeder, and Danny Struck. Michelle and Eddie Kaster attended as club representatives.
Louis began the meeting by giving a quick overview of the tournament meeting which was held prior to the board meeting, and reminder of the storage/garage organization day.
Minutes: Apryl McClurg
§ Apryl presented the March minutes.
§ Joe Lybarger made a motion to accept the minutes.
§ Mark Mundy seconded the motion.
§ Motion passed unanimously.
Treasurer's Report: Renee Schoettle
§ Renee presented the Treasurer’s Report.
§ The report reflects the 2 folkstyle state tournaments – still waiting on a janitorial invoice.
§ Joe Downing made a motion to accept the report as presented.
§ John Schattner seconded the motion.
§ Motion passed unanimously.
Old Business:
Moving Up an Age Division Committee Report
§ Sharon Dowden has gathered information from OH, WI, MI and IL.
§ IL doesn’t move up, they overlap divisions.
§ OH, WI and MI do not move up.
College Exhibition Matches @ Freestyle State
§ Kyle Fellure is working on matches for Sunday at Freestyle State..
New Business:
June Meeting
§ Important Planning meeting scheduled for June 28th for critiquing 2009 and planning 2010.
Nominating Committee
§ In preparation for the election of officers, appointments were made for the nominating committee which consists of all 5 Section Directors (Corine Kendrick will be chairperson), 1 officer (JD Minch), 1 board member (John Schattner) and an At-Large member who is not a board member (Aaron Moss).
Scholarship Committee
§ Scholarship selection committee was organized to review the applications and select the recipients of the 2009 scholarships. Sharon Rosbottom (Scholarship Director), JD Minch, Joe WIllman, Corine Kendrick, and Mary Freidt.
§ Applications must be postmarked by April 15, 2009.
§ Recipients will be awarded a $1000 college scholarship.
Folkstyle State 2010
§ It will be difficult for Ben Davis (Aaron Moss) to shift the dates in 2010 for Kids Folkstyle State. (Easter falls on March 28th with only 4 weekends in March 2010).
§ Ben Davis would like to continue to host Kids Folkstyle State, but the schedule at Ben Davis does not allow us any flexibility due to other scheduled events.
§ A proposal from Southport High School has been received for 2010.
Legal Report
§ Lana Pendoski has been contacted by a father who cannot obtain a coaches card, due to his background check.
§ We discussed the situation, and Lana will explain the process to the father. 1) Application 2) If he fails 3)Appeal with USA Wrestling. ISWA has no authority.
§ Must have a coaches card w/ background check for traveling and coaching at Regional and National events.
§ Copper, Bronze, Silver or Gold are required to coach at our state ISWA tournaments.
§ Clubs can disallow participation at practice, etc.
Complaint Concerning a Current ISWA Club
§ Board of Review was selected: Lana Pendoski (Law and Legislation Director), Pat Van Horn (Tournament Director) and Trina Dowden, Mark Stevenson, Apryl McClurg (3 board members).
§ This committee will review and report.
Directors Reports
§ Vice Chair of Administration – Tom Dolly
o Sports Medicine – Isaac Hook
§ Not Present. No Report.
o Membership Director – Trina Dowden
§ Current Membership Numbers: Sanctions 90, Clubs 164, Athletes 5649 and coaches to USAW approximately 418.
§ Currently reviewing clubs with zero reporting of membershiip
o Director of Services – Sharon Dowden
§ Mailing to 22 clubs that did not rejoin the ISWA in 2009.
§ New Castle has cancelled their tournament.
§ This year there were 25 Folkstyle, 10 Folkstyle Beginners, 18 Freestyle, and 10 Greco tournaments.
§ Reviewing Team Leader instructions with Jeff McClurg.
§ Champion T-shirts for Freestyle and Greco: Chris Lynch is willing to donate these shirts, or will share the expense with another sponsor.
§ Clinic book issue – to be resolved with Danny Struck.
§ Location for Annual meeting – check on Beech Grove location.
o Registration Director – Joe Lybarger
§ Gearing up for Greco State.
§ The handling of early releases seemed to work well at Folkstyle State.
o Law & Legislation Director – Lana Pendoski
§ Gave her report earlier in meeting.
o Tournament Statistics Director – Carol Schroeder
§ Still lacking results on counts on some Folkstyle Tournaments. Some clubs seem confused by the paperwork they are receiving. Overall going well.
§ Mark Stevenson asked if Freestyle qualification was still necessary. Discussion followed.
o Transportation Director – John Schattner
§ Keystone will be closed for 4 months beginning 4-13-09. Should post on the internet for families traveling to events (allow extra travel time).
§ Rooms are confirmed for Central Regionals.
§ Needs to know dates and location for Cadet and Junior Dual camps.
§ Recommended the book “The Silent Gladiator” by Nicholas Hopping. Great book on the 2004 Olympic Trials.
o Equipment Director – Bill Nicely
§ Folkstyle equipment worked out well.
§ Currently working on summer equipment with JD Minch.
o Hospitality Director – Linda Robinson
§ Thanks Michelle Kastin for her assistance at Folkstyle State.
§ Confirmed the “social” for Schoolboy Duals would be the same as last year.
§ Working on coverage for Schoolboy Duals.
o Section 1 – Joe Willmann
§ Not Present. No Report.
o Section 2 – Mary Friedt
§ Not Present. No Report.
o Section 3 – Sharon Wise
§ Not Present. No Report.
o Section 4 – Mark Stevenson
§ Has contacted 6 clubs about rejoining.
§ Presented the ISWA with awards from Middle School Duals: 3rd and 4th place.
§ Ed Pendoski interjected that IL is choosing their team in the same manner as IN.
o Section 5 – Corrine Kendrick
§ All is well in Section 5.

§ Thanked everyone for their hard work at the Folkstyle State Tournaments.
§ Briefly discussed the tournament meeting which was held prior to the board meeting.
§ Section Directors can help with table help by sending emails to their clubs.
§ Clubs that send in their table help form in advance get 5 additional team points.
§ Discussion of other possible incentives to encourage table help participation at the club level.
§ Reviewed preregistration guidelines – communicate information.
o Mat Officials Developmental Director – Mark Mundy
§ Passed along good comments from Folkstyle State Tournaments.
§ Saw Mike and Karen Miller @ Princeton!
§ Sending emails and letters in an effort to recruit officials.
§ Sending 8 officials to Central Regionals. Set on Cadet Dual official. Working on Junior Dual official.
§ Rule modifications posted on our website seems to help.
o Folkstyle Referees Developmental Director – Jim Littlejohn
§ Not Present.
§ Clarification that Huntington (Folkstyle State) has a Facilities Director, and thanked everyone for their support during the Folkstyle Tournaments.
Pairing Officials Director – Jean Whetstone
§ Folkstyle State went well. Good comments, Good help.
o Pairing Officials Developmental Director – Joe Downing
§ Working on database for pairers.
§ Need to continue to work on help with inputting for state tournaments. Those regional weigh in sites that input information after their site closed, was a huge help.
§ There was a large turnout for clinic at Ben Davis. Friday night clinic was a good decision.
o Scholarship Director – Sharon Rosbottom
§ Has only received 2 applications, but expects more before the deadline of April 15th.
o State Coaches Director – Danny Struck
§ Thinks the reason that some clubs do not rejoin is due to misunderstood information.
§ Folkstyle Nationals: Great group of kids, Good trip. Even though the numbers were down from last year, feels that we need to continue to offer this opportunity.
§ Currently working on coaches for the summer trips. Currently has JD Minch (JR Team Leader), Marty Vlahoss (Asst Jr Team Leader), Jeff McClurg (Cadet Team Leader), and Tom Dolly has (Asst Cadet Team Leader). Still working on coaches.
§ Keith Sieracki is in Afghanistan and Jim Humphries is also unavailable this year.
§ Talking to USA Wrestling about the inconsistency of tests and materials. They are aware and it is being addressed.
§ Would like to have coaches present different topics instead of spending 3 hours teaching a video that does not relate to the test.
§ Tom Dolly suggested that coaches and team leaders attend the June meeting @ 11am (prior to board meeting).
§ Coaches who have volunteered time will be considered for Cultural Exchange Trips.
§ It was discussed that wristbands are only to be given to those with Bronze or Copper cards and a photo ID.
§ Is the coaches pool approved by the board?
§ Coaches must have cards and completed background checks.
o Regional Training Center Director – Rex Peckinpaugh
§ No Report.
o Cultural Exchange Director – Ed Wojdyla
§ Not Present. No Report.
o Team Leader Director – Jeff McClurg
§ Team Leaders are lined up for Fargo, Jr Duals and Schoolboy Duals. Still working on Cadet Duals.
§ Working with Beth Lybarger on Womens’ team.
o Director – Ed Pendoski
§ No Report.
o Cadet Director – Jake Harreld
§ Not Present. No Report.
o Junior Director – Cale Hoover
§ Not Present. No Report.
o Folkstyle Director – Chris Lynch
§ Great Folkstyle season – still having Folkstyle tournaments.
§ 21 kids made the Iowa trip (budgeted for 32). 4 kids placed. Numbers might be down due to economy, more IN kids participated via other transportation.
§ Virginia tournament-IN had several place finishers with good IN representation.
§ Has ideas for other trips we might like to promote.
§ Kevin Bracken and Alex Dolly-good contacts for Greco
o Greco Director – Mike Weimer
§ Not Present, but called in.
§ Working on internet for Greco State.
Women’s Director – Beth Lybarger
§ Numbers for Folkstyle State were the same as last year.
§ Starting to make calls for Fargo.
§ Womens’ Developmental Camp on June 26, 27 and 28.
o IN College Coach’s Rep – Kyle Fellure
§ Not Present. No Report.
