Mike has been a valued coach, official, director and volunteer in Indiana for several decades. Some of the many areas he has been involved in:

 Mike is always present loading trucks for countless events from 2003 to present. Mike is most present with kids officiating on the mat as both a USAW

Mike is married to Michelle McCarthy with 3 children: Rachel, Mike IV & Jake. Mike embraces the John Hurrle Memorial legacy of “Do it for the kids!” 

John Hurrle Award Information

John Hurrle, one of the original founders and lifetime member of the Indiana State Wrestling Association, coached for many years at Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis, IN. John was devoted to wrestling and to the kids in the state and served on the Board of Directors from 1978 until his death in 1991. The ISWA is dedicated to the example that John set for our organization. John’s motto was “DO IT FOR THE KIDS!” It is a motto the ISWA has adopted as their own.  The John Hurrle Award is presented annually by the Indiana State Wrestling Association to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the sport of Amateur Wrestling in the State of Indiana. The winner is chosen from nominations submitted by ISWA member clubs and directors and is presented to the recipient at the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Banquet held each year in February.

Men's 16U Fargo Report

Results: Team Indiana took 45 16U athletes to Fargo North Dakota for a week of wrestling at the nations biggest national tournament. In the freestyle portion of the competition we had 5 athletes who competed in the round of 12 otherwise known as the blood round, and we had 2 athletes who were victorious in their semifinal bouts and found themselves wrestling on the elevates stage for a national title. Team Indiana finished with 3 All-Americans in Freestlye with Nate Rioux (2nd @ 94lbs.), Revin Dickman (8th @ 100lbs.), and De’Alcapon Veazy (2nd @ 182lbs.). In the Greco portion of the tournament we added 2 new All-Americans and had 3 athletes earn double All-American Status! Greco All-Americans were; Nate Rioux (7th @ 94lbs.), Revin Dickman (6th @ 100lbs.), Alex Smith (6th @ 145lbs.), Brenton Russell (7th @ 160lbs.), and De’Alcapon Veazy (3rd @ 182lbs.). 

Team Results: 3 Freestyle All-Americans 11th as a team, 5 Greco All-Americans 16th as a team.

In 2022 the ISWA took a whopping 30 women to Fargo and came home with 9 All-Americans. That's nearly a 30% growth in one year with last year's number being at 19. The 2022 team also beat the record for most All-Americans with 9 and the previous year record was 8. Here's the Tale of the Tape.
