Shaun Schmaltz-Coach of the Year

The 2025 John Hurrle Memorial Award will be announced at the the ISWA Award Celebration.   

Nominations will be accepted up until March 31st, 2025.  A nomination form will be provided to every club admin and ISWA board member/ISWA lifetime member to submit a worthy candidate.  

John Hurrle, one of the original founders and lifetime member of the Indiana State Wrestling Association, coached for many years at Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis, IN. John was devoted to wrestling and to the kids in the state and served on the Board of Directors from 1978 until his death in 1991. The ISWA is dedicated to the example that John set for our organization. John’s motto was “DO IT FOR THE KIDS!” It is a motto the ISWA has adopted as their own.  The John Hurrle Award is presented annually by the Indiana State Wrestling Association to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the sport of Amateur Wrestling in the State of Indiana. The winner is chosen from nominations submitted by ISWA member clubs and directors and is presented to the recipient at the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Fall Clinic and the ISWA Awards Ceremony Aug 4th at Franklin Community High School.

James Tanniehill is a long time icon in Indiana.  Coach Tanniehill was a huge influence during my high school years. My first interaction with him was at a camp ran by John Hurrle at Tech High School. I learned my first foot sweep. He introduced me to a band work out. Band work-outs were not introduced at this time yet, but he was an innovator for wrestling workouts. I was able to work out with him when he was coaching at Indiana State, while I was at Indiana Central (Uindy). Coach Tanniehill was passionate about teaching technique. Alot of my early influence came from his coaching and I admired his success, his longevity and his belief in giving back to kids in this sport. He is the best example of the John Hurrle award, doing what he loves for kids and the sport of wrestling just like John Hurrle. John is in 5 Wrestling Hall of Fames. Coach Tannehill has been a coach for many years and has focused on developing kids for all of his coaching career. In addition to coaching at Terre North and Pike, he also started the Take Down Crime club in Indianapolis. Coach Tannehill has been focused on making better kids through wrestling and exemplifies doing it for the kids. This quote from Coach is one that shows his focus and investment. “The fun for it is in trying. You may not become a champion, but you’ll become a better person and a better person and a better version of yourself in the attempt to become a champion wrestler. And so, I enjoy doing that with these young people. They may not be a champion, but the goal is, we’re going to set that as a goal, and then as close as you get to it will make you a better person.”
